Smooth Fox Terrier - A remarkable breed

Smooth Fox Terriers are very desirable pals, and you should find them to be clean and at home in any climate and any size household. We chose to own and breed Smooths because of their intelligence, liveliness, outgoing personality and easy maintenance. As well as for their sporty good looks. They are high energy and do require fenced yards, or the ability for a good long walk daily.

We have found Smooth Fox Terriers to be:

• Extremely Adaptable . They enjoy play as well as curling up with you to read or watch TV. They are up for anything you are doing, from hiking, a good walk, ball play or a game of tug.

• Excellent Companions for both adults and children. They demonstrate great patience, have a high pain threshold and are not easily hurt by small children. They are loyal and love their people.

• Basically, an Honest Breed. The breed standard has remained virtually unchanged for over a hundred years. There is still a good-sized gene pool so there are few genetic or hereditary disorders affecting the breed.

• Easy to Groom and Maintain. As a pet, they just require a good brushing, once or twice a week, keeping nails trimmed and ears and teeth clean. An occasional bath helps loosen any coat that is shedding. They do shed and mostly white short hairs.

• Smart, Clever and Fun. We have found that the main requirement to owning a Smooth is having a good sense of humor - they certainly have one.

• Eager to Learn New Things. They are good at Agility, Tricks, Barn Hunt and Scent Work especially. Some do well at Obedience and Rally and of course FastCat.

• "Free-Thinking Problem Solvers". Being originally bred to do their job without human guidance, they do require some special incentives to always do what we want. Fenced yards and training are critical to living with a Smooth.

Life with a Smooth is never dull. They are quite often in rehabilitation programs and retirement homes. This is due to the adaptability and love of the human race.

Harrier - the Dog of Your Dreams

Harriers are unique canine characters. They are extremely attractive hounds of a wonderful size. But don't consider a Harrier on looks alone! Behind those soft brown eyes and sweet face is a very intelligent, independent and self-willed scent hound, bred to work in packs, following their nose.

Good fences are a requirement, and they do not like being totally alone all day. Being pack dogs, another canine companion is often best.

We have found Harriers to be:

• Wonderful Family Dogs. They are loving and affectionate to everyone in the family. They are especially great with kids. Having a fairly high activity level they do not do well in small apartments.

• Love Spending Time with Their People. They want to be with you either snuggling while you watch a movie on tv or out in the garden. They can be diggers however.

• Without Dignity. Harriers can always make you laugh, have a wonderful sense of humor and aren't embarrassed to play the clown. They love to play throughout their entire lives.

• Easy to Groom. They do not shed much (compared to our Smooth Fox Terriers). They enjoy being brushed and regular brushing keeps shedding down. An occasional bath, regular nail trims, ear and teeth cleaning is all they need.

• Adaptable. They love athletic activities like hiking, biking and jogging (leashes are required or their nose might take over). If introduced to water early, they can enjoy swimming and water activities too.

• Pack Hounds. They get along well with other dogs and other pets, including cats.

• Highly Energetic but Not Hyperactive. Due to their independent nature, they do require consistent training. They do thrive on activities with you and Scent Work is a natural for this breed.
